WINCH SAFETY

Things you must know when using a winch.

  • Always learn how to work the winch properly. Read and understand the operation’s manual of the winch.
  • Winches have a pulling capacity, never exceed the limits of the winch you are going to use. Make sure the winch has enough pulling power to move the object.
  • Always Plan Ahead, this will help you complete the job safely.
  • Cables must be checked frequently to ensure there are not any kinks or frays, if they are found the cable shouldn’t be used and must be replaced.
  • Make sure the area is clear and there are not any people or pets in the winching area. Do not let people stand beside or in front of the winch and cable during operation.
  • Winch Safety, always wear suitable leather gloves.
  • Always use a dampener, for real safety put two on the cable. Dampeners have large pockets, these can be filled with soil, which adds real extra safety.
  • Always use the winch pulling in as straight a line as possible and never double the winch cable back or attach it to itself.
  • Nobody should stand close or step over the cable while in use.
  • Never winch in long bursts. Short bursts will prevent the winch from overheating. Winches use a lot of power and can drain a battery very quickly.
  • Securing Anchors – don’t use a dead tree.
  • Always use tree protectors installing them round the bottom of the tree.
  • Concentrate – stay focused while winching, think Winch Safety.
  • Before you start, recheck shackles, clevis and hooks, ensuring they are fastened securely.
  • Never use a winch to hoist, remember, winches pull, hoists lift.
  • Once complete always check every piece of equipment used storing correctly
