Types of Boat Trailer Winches
The strap that hauls the boat will be either a steel cable or nylon.
Manual Boat Trailer Winches
The most popular type of trailer winch, because is simple to use but does require muscle power to crank the handle. With that power crank the handle clockwise to pull the boat onto the trailer and counterclockwise to release the boat.
Electric Boat Trailer Winches
If you want to avoid using that muscle power an electric winch is perfect. No cranking, instead an electric winch is connected to a car battery. Very powerful but more expensive compared to the manual winch. Electric winches generally have a greater weight capacity.
Lines used with Boat Trailer Winches
The line pulls and releases the boat and rapes around the winch drum. Steel cable and nylon strap are the most common. Nylon straps are similar to rucksack/car seat webbing and down not stretch even if it is wet. A more powerful alternative is the steel cable which so will demand more power from your battery it is also more bulky and heavy but does have greater pulling power.
Speed
Electric Boat Winches are generally single speed. For heavy and/or larger boats a two-speed winch is recommended. They have a low and fast speed which gives the choice to select which is more appropriate under different circumstances.
